sweet when he didn't know which fork to use. I showed him in a discreet way by picking up my silverware first. He watched me like a hawk and imitated my every move. He never seemed embarrassed, but one time he was so excited about a story he was telling that he dropped his fork on the floor. He started to pick it up, and I bent down and whispered, "Leave it there." On the way back up, our foreheads bumped gently and we were close enough to kiss. It gave me a chill.
When I sat up, I saw Branson and his parents coming in the door. He was glaring and me and Derek.
I excused myself from the table and approached the Prices. After I wished Mr. Price a happy Fathers Day, I kissed Branson on the cheek. He turned his head away.
"I missed you," I whispered.
"I'm having dinner with my parents," he said coldly. "We'll talk later."
I returned to my seat and enjoyed our Fathers Day dinner.
When I got home I thought about Branson all evening. Dad opened the gift my brothers and I had pitched in for, but which 1 had picked out. He said he couldn't wait to wear his new suit to church the next Sunday.
When it was time to go to bed, I lay there looking up at the ceiling, praying my boyfriend and I could work things out between us.
Around two in the morning I heard a tap on my window. I opened it and found Branson standing there. During our junior year he used to sneak into my room whenever his parents got into one of their terrible arguments. He'd park his car down the road and walk almost a mile just to spend time talking with me.
"You look beautiful," he said when I let him in.
"What are you doing here?" I asked in a whisper, grabbing a robe to put on over my nightgown.
